When you first start your diet one of many things you will learn right away is that keeping a food journal is very helpful. Tracking all of the foods you consume can help you figure out which foods you will be eating as well as which foods you are not eating enough of. For example, when you keep a food log for a few days you may notice that while you eat lots of fruit, you almost never eat any vegetables. Having it all written down will help uou recognize the elements of your diet that need to change as well as how much exercise you need to get to make sure that you burn enough calories to keep your waistline in check.

But imagine if you write each and every thing down but still are unable to figure out how to lose weight? You can track your foods the right way or the wrong way. A food record isn’t merely a list of what exactly you’ve eaten during the day. Other kinds of important information will need to be written down also. Here are some of the points you need to do to be more effective at food tracking.

Write down your feelings when you eat. This can help you determine when you use food to help soothe emotional issues. This will also show you whether or not you gravitate in the direction of specific foods based on your mood. Many people will reach for junk foods if we are worried, angry or depressed and will be more likely to choose healthier options when we are happy or content. Paying attention to what you reach for if you find yourself upset will help you stock similar but healthier items in your house for when you need a snack—you could also start talking to someone to figure out why you cure moods with food (if that is something that you actually do).
